| A Morning Of Loud Honks |
By Jeania Canel
Being a Mom of two little girls doesn't leave a lot of extra time for hunting. For two years now I have wanted to try goose hunting. My friends/co-workers in game calls had been inviting me to go, with my response being "I don't have the time." This goose season I was presented with a little extra time so my nephew Brandon and I hooked up with Tom Deharde (game call associate) and the Haring brothers and headed East of Clare to set out decoys. I'm not sure the exact number of decoys we set up but the field was full. Daylight was breaking, the ducks and geese were talking. We had a short wait before we could begin shooting. As we took our positions in the ditch stories began to errupt, with everyone offering a piece of advise. They all began telling me what to expect. As Tom began to call the excitement started to mount. After a few short calls and the wave of the goose decoy flag we had geese over head. Brandon harvested the first goose making it look so easy. What a proud moment, my nephew got the first bird. Things started to progress with more flocks coming in. Giving each of us the opportunity for shooting. We all shot several rounds, ended up with nine geese and numerous memories that will last a life time. The memories alone without the geese would have been enough for me. Thanks Tom, John, Jim and Brandon for the awesome opportunity. JEANIA M. CANEL GUN DEPARTMENT MANAGER
