Monday, September 10th 2001 started with a ride out of Idaho Falls, Idaho to the famous South Fork of the Snake River.  Accompanied by Dennis Dann of Lansing, Michigan and our host Bob Long, a local Trout Unlimited member, we were on our way with a driftboat following behind.

We started our float trip with anticipation of hooking cutthroat trout or whatever would rise to our flies.  The excitement subsided as we rounded the first bend of the river and we were met with the sun rising over the mountains.  What a wonderful opportunity to be there and see such beauty.  All conversation stopped as we gazed at our surroundings.  Eventually we got back to talking trout and tied on the first fly of the day.

We pulled up to a gravel bar, waded out 6 - 8 ft. from shore and dropped a pink cahill in the water.  A spunky 10" cutthroat hit it almost immediately and the day was off to a great start.  Each of us hooked up several times and then we headed down the river, fishing as we went.  What a great day, not only hooking up on cutthroat trout, some up to 18 inches but rainbow and brown trout as well.  The big browns came alive just before dark, biting on #18 and #20 mahogany duns; some of these browns were 22 to 24 inches long.

We pulled in our lines and headed for our takeout point, rounded the bend and a calf moose swam across in front of us to the opposite bank to join its mother who was watching us intently.  What a great sight to see to end our day.

The next morning as we prepared to drive to Salt Lake City to catch our flights home the radio came alive with the news of the World Trade Center attack.  With the grace of God we were able to rent a car and drive home.

It's a long drive from Salt Lake City, Utah to Clare, Michigan and it gives you a lot of time to think about what's important in life.  We are fortunate to live in a country, which affords us opportunities to pursue trout, game or just go for a hike in such beauty, and with such freedom.  Be proud to wave the flag.
